Anthony Heidweiller

Acclaimed opera maker, impresario, creator and inspirer Anthony Heidweiller’s work has championed new and innovative opera concepts such as participation, community and collaboration for decades.

The baritone founded the Youth Opera Festival (Yo! Opera) in 2001 as a way to expose younger generations to opera. With Heidweiller as its artistic director, Yo! Opera would go on to win accolades like “most innovative event” for its Opera on the Bus project in 2006 and the Prins Bernhard Culture Fund award for Art and Culture Education two years later. In 2011, Heidweiller received the Culture Award of the Municipality of Utrecht, The Netherlands.

In addition to his work with Yo!,Heidweiller has served as artistic director of the Operamakers Foundation since 2012 and of the Opéra de-ci de-là project at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence in France since 2019. 

He is affiliated with institutions such as the Dutch National Opera, serving as associate artistic director of the Opera Forward Festival; De Theaterschool and Conservatorium van Amsterdam in The Netherlands; the Festival of Flanders, Brussels; and the Ruhr.2010 – Kulturhauptstadt Europas campaign in Germany.

In June 2021 he was appointed new director of the Academy of Theatre & Dance by the Amsterdam University of the Arts (AHK).
